Volunteer with Heifer International South Africa - Cape Town, Gauteng
Do you want to do something about hunger and poverty in South Africa but you're not sure how? Do you worry that you're not doing enough for the 12 million people in our own country who don't know where their next meal is coming from? Would you like to see long-term solutions instead of short-term hand-outs? Are you looking for a way to contribute beyond giving money?
Heifer International South Africa needs your help!
Heifer International South Africa is a community development organisation that partners with impoverished communities to end hunger and poverty in South Africa and care for the Earth by helping poor men and women to become successful small farmers. Through the generous support of our corporate, institutional and individual donors, Heifer is able to provide each family with seeds, trees, training and, most importantly, livestock (sheep, goats, cows, pigs or chickens). Heifer works with the farmers for 3-5 years until they are able to continue farming without our help. Farmer groups are encouraged to work together to market their products and to help each other succeed. Each farmer also passes on the equivalent of what he or she received to another needy family - a woman who gets a cow will give a calf to her neighbour so that she, too, can have milk for her children to drink and manure to grow healthy vegetables.
Heifer is looking for four volunteers (two Gauteng, two Cape Town) to help us raise awareness about the problem of hunger and poverty in South Africa and how investing time, support and resources in poor communities can help them become successful farmers (Heifer's model). Volunteers will be asked to do presentations at schools, churches and other group gatherings, to share information informally - as ambassadors for Heifer - and to help Heifer find innovative ways to raise funds and connect with supporters. We're looking for people who are confident, dedicated and determined. We're passionate about ending hunger and poverty in South Africa and we need the help of others who're passionate too.
They will need to be able to give some time during work hours (for example to visit schools) but this role is not expected to take more than about 4 - 5 hours per week. Volunteers will be asked to commit for at least 3 months but are welcome to join us for longer. Training and all materials will be provided and volunteers will be supported on an ongoing basis by Heifer staff.
This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. Volunteers must be based in Gauteng (Johannesburg or Pretoria) or Cape Town
To apply, please send a cover letter (1 page) and CV (2 pages) to heifersa@heifer.org.za. Contact us on heifersa@heifer.org.za for more information.

Volunteer Editor/Proof-reader
Heifer International South Africa is a community development organisation that partners with impoverished communities to end hunger and poverty in South Africa and care for the Earth. 12 million people in South Africa are estimated to be food insecure, most of them in rural areas. We help poor women and men to become successful small farmers through gifts of training, livestock, trees and seeds. In turn, these farmers pass on this opportunity to other families.
It's important work and sometimes there is too much to do and not enough hands to do it. Heifer International South Africa is looking for a volunteer editor/proof-reader to help us make sure we're doing the best job we possibly can.
The Volunteer Editor/Proof-reader will review, edit and correct news articles, press releases, newsletters, proposals and reports. He/she must have an excellent grasp of grammar and writing, and a basic understanding of development and/or hunger. He/she must also have the patience to work with people who may not be first-language English speakers. A working knowledge of writing and editing standards and the ability to edit both American and British English would also be helpful.
The Volunteer Editor/Proof-reader role will require an average of 4 hours per week for a period of 3-6 months (minimum). He/she must have access to reliable internet and own computer equipment. This role is ideal for a retired person, teacher, university student or anyone else who is passionate about hunger and poverty and has an eye for detail.
This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. The Volunteer Editor/Proof-reader can be located anywhere in the world.
To apply, please send a cover letter (1 page) and CV (2 pages) to heifersa@heifer.org.za. Contact us on heifersa@heifer.org.za for more information.
